This wonderful numeracy resource is perfect for children who can count but are ready to take on the next mathematical steps such as addition, subtraction, and number linked to quantity. The tree is magnetic and comes with 18 apples (three sets of 6 apples in yellow, green, and red). Additionally, there are 3 dice, with each dice having a colored holder that matches the color of the apples. In open play, children can randomly hang the magnetic apples on the apple tree and count them. They can count up to 18 or create apple patterns in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s. Using the dice and colored holders, they can roll the dice to get instructions like picking and placing 4 red apples, then using the second dice for 3 green apples, and finally using the third dice for 6 yellow apples. Alternatively, they can play games in pairs by adding and subtracting the number of apples indicated by the dice. Many other mathematical computations can be explored with this set, such as working out the missing number. For example, they could start by placing a random number of apples on the tree, e.g., 3 red apples, then roll the dice to get 6. At this point, they must figure out how many more apples they need to add to the tree to make 6.
